Its more of a jute than a soft rag-rug type. The channels are sturdy, which I like. (feels like a foot massage, lol) I put a cushy felt pad underneath to give it a little more oomph. It was a little stinky on arrival, as many manufactured products wrapped in plastic are, so I put a fan on it for a bit and let it air out-no big deal at all.
