Perhaps William Morris’s most recognizable design, Strawberry Thief, was inspired by the thrushes that crept under Morris’s strawberry nets in his garden at Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire. The original pattern took several days to print using hand-carved woodblocks to build up the different colors, and ‘Strawberry Thief’ was consequently one of Morris’s firm’s most expensive cottons. While waiting to see the first piece printed, Morris endured sleepless nights in his lodgings at Merton Abbey. Designed in 1883, Strawberry Thief remains one of William Morris’s most popular and iconic designs. This iconic pattern forms part of The Gallery’s collection of earlier printed chintz and wallpaper lengths. Project in progress, but very happy with wallpaper! It’s a nice thickness and texture. The pattern is fairly easy to match and its almost random quality helped camouflage an area where our wall was wonky and paper had to be cut and patched. Could not make a piece match perfectly for some reason so we hid it in the corner and people have a hard time finding it even when looking for it, thanks to the pattern. Using this wallpaper in a power room with board and batten painted the lighter gray not much lighter than the background. Even lighter gray tile floor. Cabenit is white with a marble vanity top. Chrome faucet, frosted gold lighting with white shades. The mirror will have a small frosted gold border. If you look at the wallpaper you’ll see flower petals that are a muted gold.
