What Is Microfiber?

Microfiber is a common fabric used in upholstery because of its soft texture and durability. The word microfiber is used to describe the incredible thinness of the fibers. Microfibers are manufactured to be thinner than any natural fiber, such as cotton, wool, or silk. They are typically made from a synthetic material like polyester and sometimes include nylon for added strength.

Benefits of Microfiber

Since the fibers are so densely packed, microfiber is durable and easy to care for while maintaining a soft, cozy surface. Because microfiber is made from polyester and nylon, the fibers make maintenance simple and add a fade-resistant quality that keeps colors bright.

Microfiber comes in a wide array of colors from familiar neutrals to vibrant shades. Its resilience and versatility make microfiber furniture, such as sofas and sectionals, a great choice for homes with children and pets.

The tight weave can withstand everyday wear from pets or children. Microfiber is hypoallergenic, meaning it is a safe choice for those with sensitive skin. It is also naturally water-resistant and non-absorbent due to the close knit of the ultra-fine, giving you more time to clean up spots before they become stains.

Whether you prefer coastal or farmhouse styles, one of the benefits of microfiber furniture is that it blends into any design. In addition to several colors, microfiber also comes in a variety of textures that are made to resemble suede, velvet, and cotton upholstery.

Microfiber upholstery offers high-quality comfort at a reasonable price. It is a great, affordable option that wears well over time and is made to last.

How to Care for Microfiber

Microfiber upholstery is a top choice for families with pets and children. With the right care, a microfiber sofa could last longer than other fabric upholstery options.

How to Clean Microfiber

We recommend cleaning microfiber regularly with a vacuum by using the upholstery attachment. Regular vacuuming makes maintenance easier in a long-term setting and prevents any damage that could be caused by dust or crumbs.

For minor spills, quickly blot with a soft cloth. Dampen the cloth slightly if necessary. Polyester microfiber is naturally non-absorbent and water-resistant, but unattended spills can lead to discoloration, stains, and water marks. For extra stain prevention, try a spray-on fabric protector to avoid potential spills sinking into the fabric.

How to Remove Stains From Microfiber

To remove stains from microfiber, look at the cleaning code provided by the manufacturer. You can find this on the tag or below the seat cushions. "W" means that the material can be cleaned with water. "S" means that it should be cleaned with a solvent instead of water. "S-W" means it can be treated with either.

For a "W" code, mix a quart of lukewarm water with a tablespoon of dish soap. Starting in a small area, use a cloth or sponge to rub the fabric gently in circular motions. Then blot it dry with a clean cloth. Use a bristle brush to fluff up the surface of the microfiber. If the stain is more stubborn, treat the spot with an upholstery cleaning solution.

For "S" code furniture, spray the spot lightly with rubbing alcohol and blot with a clean, white towel. Keep blotting with a cloth until the stain starts lifting. Let the spot dry completely and finish with a stiff-bristle brush to maintain the soft texture of the fibers.

Pro Tip:

Test cleaning solutions and solvents on a less visible area first. Work in small sections to keep the fabric from getting saturated.
