These plates are casual style and good quality. I chose these plates because of the durable glaze or surface finish. And that they're dishwasher and microwave approved. My previous everyday plates showed the dark gray marks from the silverware. These plates, so far, are not showing any dark scratch marks. I would have given a better rating, but I ordered 2 sets of these plates and they shipped separately and arrived in 2 different dyelots. Spode's Italian pattern has been in continuous production now for 210 years. It shouldn't work: a Kakiemon Japanese border married to an Italian caprice, but it does and continues to delight. It has changed in many ways through the years, and some of the current changes...thicker, less white body...too much consistency in the engravings...disappoint me, but the sturdier ware has it's advantages, too, for modern needs such as microwaving and the dishwasher.
