Why are the houses sideways in Charleston? When the city's first streets were laid out in 1680, residential lots were long and deep but had little street frontage. Placing the house sideways on the lot made the best use of space. This also allowed the home to take full advantage of the prevailing southerly breezes, necessary in the hot summer climate. Perfect layout for a functional birdhouse that provides a home for small birds. The roof is topped with red cedar shingles, has a 1.25” hole, and has lots of details like a real house. It comes with a bracket for hanging on a fence or tree. Complete with ventilation, drainage, and a cleanout. You may want to preserve this beautiful home with a polyurethane spray.
