Reorganizing the Kitchen

how to reorganize your home

Reorganizing your home (especially the kitchen) might seem daunting, but if you divide the room into sections, it will make the task much easier. We've outlined our favorite tips below.

  • Reorganize your food storage containers. If you have any containers or lids that don't have a partner, toss them out.
  • While you're at it, reorganize your pots and pans. Don't hesitate to donate pots or pans if you have multiples of the same size.
  • Put pantry staples you use everyday like flour, pasta, oatmeal, and beans into airtight containers that stack. You'll save space by unboxing, and your pantry will look great, too.
  • Take back your kitchen counter. When you have less items on display, it makes cleaning up easier. Place small appliances you don't use everyday, like the blender or food processor, in cabinets or in the pantry. The appliances will stay cleaner for longer by not collecting grease or dust while sitting out.
  • Assess your spice rack situation. Arrange each spice alphabetically or by cuisine. If you want to save a bit of money, consider buying spices in bulk from a co-op and placing them in jars. Just affix a label to the front and you're set.
  • Organize that junk drawer. The secret is out – having a junk drawer is fine! Maximizing its use is key. Take everything out and sort through it on a kitchen counter. Go back in and use drawer dividers to declutter and keep things neatly corralled.

Reorganizing the Living Room

Between working on puzzles as a family and date nights at home, your living room gets a lot of use. The biggest threat to disorganization – and your peace of mind – is clutter. When your children and partner leave the room, encourage them to start bringing empty cups, books, and chargers with them. To get your family into the habit of reorganizing your home, consider placing a small basket near the living room hall and putting items that need to go back to their home in the basket. As your family leaves the room, they'll remember to take their belongings with them.

Aside from clutter, one of the things that takes up a lot of space in our living rooms are the extra blankets and pillows. Rather than taking up space on shelves, invest in a couple of neutral-toned baskets. These baskets will blend in with the rest of the room and give you easy access to storing throw blankets and pillows. If you like farmhouse decor, use a blanket ladder instead – they are space-saving and look fantastic.

Invest in a console table or entertainment system that's made to last. We prefer TV stands with hidden shelves or barn doors, that way you can seamlessly organize cables, game systems, and the Wi-Fi router. Consider a TV stand with adjustable shelving, that way you're able to change it up over time. This streamlined look will make it easier to relax during movie night, because you won't be looking at endless cords and chargers.

Reorganizing the Bedrooms

One of the best parts of reorganizing your home is getting a chance to refresh the bedrooms. Because we spend so much of our time in our rooms, whether it's sleeping or choosing an outfit, it's important to make sure it stays organized. Invest in furniture that looks great and provides storage space. One of our favorites is the bedroom bench. Tuck your extra blankets inside and use the surface as a spot to sit and put your shoes on.

Make the most out of every piece of furniture by investing in pieces that have built-in storage. For instance, a nightstand with drawers will give you more space to store bedtime must-haves than an end table would. If you're a big reader, take it a step further by opting for a headboard with built-in shelves.

Use under-bed bins to create storage in an unused space. Store your child's out of season clothing under the bed. Alternatively, you can create a gift-wrapping storage station under a guest bed.

Maximize your closet by using nontraditional pieces of furniture. We love bringing a bar cart into the closet to set up a place to organize hats and accessories. If you own a lot of coats, consider setting a freestanding coat rack in a walk-in closet. You'll be able to squeeze a little more storage space out of the closet by removing some of the bulkier items.

Use the walls in your bedrooms to display artwork and photos. It's tempting to just prop artwork up on a dresser or vanity, but it's important to keep the surface areas in your room as free as possible. If you need help organizing the surface of a dresser or nightstand, consider using a decorative tray to help declutter. You can easily pick the tray up and move it out of the way if need be.

Reorganizing the Bathrooms

Bathrooms can be one of the trickiest parts of reorganizing your home because they are often small and get a lot of foot traffic. Think purposefully about what you'd like to achieve in your bathroom: more storage? A designated spot to get ready?

If the storage in your bathroom is tripping you up, pull everything out from under the sink or from the linen closet. Donate extra towels and linens to a local animal shelter. If you have a lot of people using one bathroom, consider rolling the towels to squeeze even more under the sink or on shelves.

Prioritize the items that you love and use every day. Put the beauty or cleaning products that you use most often front and center. Even better, use a decorative tray to organize your daily go-to products and avoid clutter. Your routine will feel more streamlined, and you'll set yourself up for success each morning. Use waterproof bins to organize makeup brushes, cleaning materials, and extra bath products that can be stowed in a cabinet or drawer.

If you're looking to make the bathroom more efficient, an accent piece with storage will give you the functionality you need. A chest gives you added drawers and surface area for linens and bath products. An end table set up next to the shower can provide extra space for shower products, and you can use it as a place to set your e-reader or glass of wine while taking a bath. If you place an end table in the bathroom, make sure the surface is water-resistant.
